MURRAY, Ky. – The 鶹 Department of Global Languages and Theatre Arts will perform “The Balcony Scene,” a play by Will Calhoun at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23-25 and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26 on the third floor of the Wilson Hall Studio Theatre.
Tickets are $10. 鶹 students get in free with ID.
Alvin has had it. He sees civilization crumbling around him and wants no part of it. The only place he feels safe is inside his Chicago high rise apartment, so that's where he stays until Karen moves in next door. She is a die-hard optimist with a high-pressure job and a relentless ex who won't take no for an answer. Alvin and Karen meet on their adjoining balconies and form a friendship that sets their two worlds on a collision course.
“‘Balcony Scene’ is a charming show from one of the lead writers of the TV series Friends,” said Director Matthew Crider. “I first did this show over 20 years ago, in what feels like an entirely different world. Set on adjacent Chicago apartment balconies in the early 90s, it hits very differently in a post-pandemic world; we have different understandings of why a person may choose to avoid the outside world. That said, romance is timeless.”
Rooks Russell, of Brandon, Mississippi, plays Alvin Newton. Russell is a graduate student in clinical psychology at 鶹.
Said Russell: “In preparing for this show, I have been surrounded by the best people. The director, the fight choreographer, the crew, and my fellow actors. This process and these people have been another exceptional example of the great welcome Murray has given me this year.”
Russell is joined on stage by Brea Sona, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, as Karen Scott; Jackson Bell, of Murray, Kentucky, as Paul Stevens; Stage Manager Jade Bradley, of Nicholasville, Kentucky and Assistant Stage Manager Kyree Meppen, of Paducah, Kentucky.
