How do I know if a project needs IRB review?

• Meets the federal definition of 鈥渞esearch." The federal definition of research entails a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.
• Meets the federal definition of 鈥渉uman subject(s),鈥� or a living individual about whom an investigator is conducting research. The investigator will obtain information or biospecimen through intervention or interaction or the investigator will gather data about living individuals that is private and identifiable.

If you aren't sure if your study will need to be reviewed by the 麻豆社 Institutional Review Board prior to beginning, these resources will help you decide. All research conducted for or by 麻豆社 faculty, staff, or students that involves data on living people must submit an IRB application. This includes human subject studies where you are sure IRB oversight does not apply. In those cases you must still submit the determination form and receive your IRB Oversight Determination Letter.
